The Knooihuizen family,

The Knooihuizen family is originally from Leens, in the district of De Marne, in the Province of Groningen, Netherlands. The father and grandfather of Remt Klasens Knooihuizen, owned a farm in Leens where they worked the land. Remt Klasens Knooihuizen was a day labourer, although, it is not known exactly what type of work he did. His son, Jemme Onnes Knooihuizen, who was married to Bouke Jans Drolinga, was also a farmer, first in Vliedorp, and later in Leens. Remt Klasens parents were Klaas Pieters and Martje Jeltes, and his grandparents were Pieter Claassen and Wieke Pieters. Pieter Claassen was born in 1698. Remt Klasens adopted the name Knooihuizen in 1811/1812 and he was married to Bregtje Remges Wierenga. See the signatures below as they appear on the marriage certificate of one of their children.

The family name is written in several different ways: eg. Knoeihuizen, Knoeijhuizen, Knooijhuizen, Knooihuisen, Knoohuizen, Knoizen and Newhousen. In the Netherlands, there are also a familie with the name Van Lindenhuizen, who are also part of the Knooihuizen family. All are descendants of Remt Klasens Knooihuizen. In 1847, as far as I know, the first Knooihuizens left for North America, namely, Marten Remt Knooihuizen and his wife, Antje Alberts Kuipers, with their four children. The Knooihuizen family in the United States is much larger than in The Netherlands and there are also a few families in Canada. At this time, I have found ten descendants. But I also have a branch in the United States, which I cannot connect as yet, because of a missing link. As far as The Netherlands is concerned, I have been able to find a direct line of all the male relatives. In the United States, the families have spread over several states, ie. Michigan, Texas, Illinois, New York, Indiana, Minnesota, California, North Dakota, Nebraska, Virginia and Florida, and in Canada, in the provinces of Ontario, Alberta, Saskatchewan and British Columbia.
